Great Feel - Great Sound Aug 23, 2009
By M. Nechoda
"Wiser for the experience"
I used to own a Clavinova. "Used to" is the operative word here. I really feel like I have moved up about 10 notches with the purchase of the Kohler.
Unlike the Clavinova, the "grand" sounds like a grand. Even in the highest octave, it does not sound tinny. The other instrumental sounds sound like real instruments whereas the Clav sounded "electronic."
The polyphony is excellent, and more than adequate to sate any musician's appetite.
The keys and hammer action are weighted. The Kohler feels perfectly natural and as realistic as any acoustic. (Hooray!!).
Everything can be adjusted which is very satisfying, as the velocity senstivity can sometimes make the instumental sound become a bit harsh rather than louder, as velocity would on an acoustic.
Finally there is the speaker system. It is wonderful. The Clav was disappointing in this regard. It sounded as if it used hand-me-down speakers from a 1990 boom-box. The only time the Clav ever sounded good to me was when I wore headphones. The Kohler, on the other hand, is a pleasure to listen to, as it incorporates a high-end stereo speaker system.
I love it. I am sure you will too.
absolutely love it Oct 04, 2011
By LHoward We purchased the KD160 Ebony not only because we wanted a digital piano, but also importantly because we wanted it as a piece of decorative and elegant furniture in our front room. The sound is fantastic, and it serves our purposes quite comprehensively, despite the fact that the electronics and computer system within the piano are considerably antiquated. It takes maybe 60 seconds to boot up fully, and I do worry that someday the hard drive within will fail and that the repairs will be impossible or at least quite difficult. I wish that the floppy disk were, instead, a USB key connector and that the piano were network-ready. However, because we wanted a piano as a piece of furniture first and considered all other features second to that, I am not concerned about those other things. Be aware, however, that this is very heavy, and you will need two or more strong-bodied adults to get it into the house from the street and put-together in the house.
